I have also got the same understanding as Sue. Provided the Dr has the
appropriate registration/certificate? To allow him to oversee the
programme Then a nurse can take the bloods. It is also over 10yrs since
I did this but I don't think much has changed. I used to obtain consent
(for the bloods and any subsequent reporting) take and send off to the
lab, receive the results, stick them under the Drs nose for signing and
store the records.
Have a look at the Control of Lead at Work Regs. ISBN: 9780717625659
Kind Regards
Lesley

My understanding is that this hasn't changed since I did it 10 years
ago. You need a doctor to be appointed to be reponsibile for the results
submission to the HSe but s/he doesn't have to do the test. The company
needs to complete the fomrs to appoint the docotr to their organisation.
As an OHA, I use to do all the bloods, get the results, keep the
records, inform the employees, complete the HSE report and put it in
front of the doctor to check and sign and that was Ok.
You need the formal paperwork from the HSE for the submission but you
can have your own for the rest as long as it covers the same infomration
(collect Ni number, etc) and the 'consent to report' documents for the
employees to sign so you know to report actual results of bands of
results. You should have a emans to check ID when taking the blood as
best practice
Don't know why the first and last bloods should be special - aren't they
all?
Sue

Subject: [OCC-HEALTH] Blood Leads
Hi, I am looking for advice on blood leads. I've tried HSE with little
success but would appreciate some advice - first, the first time a
company has blood leads does it need to be a medical doctor taking them?
Subsequent ones from then on can be a nurse but do the results HAVE to
be checked by a doctor? And does anyone know if the last bloods also
need to be taken by a medical doctor. I seem to be getting lots of
different views and need a definative answer if poss please.
Thanks, Katie
