LOUDER NOW! Feminism on Film
The Star and Shadow Cinema, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK
Launch Event: Wednesday 29th February, 7pm
FREE (£1annual membership required)
Presented by The Gender Research Group, Newcastle University
http://www.starandshadow.org.uk/on/season/121

LOUDER NOW! is a monthly screening of films of a feminist nature at
The Star and Shadow Cinema, presented by The Gender Research Group at
Newcastle University. It is intended that these films will enlighten,
provoke and spark discussion, build networks, and perhaps inspire
action. Each film will showcase a different aspect of feminist
thought and politics, be introduced by a specialist and post-film
discussion will be encouraged. LOUDER NOW! promotes an open
atmosphere where every opinion, thought and feeling will be respected.

Why Feminist Films at The Star and Shadow? Feminism is re-entering
social vocabulary – women and girls are reclaiming the ‘F-word’ for
their own, away from postfeminist rhetoric and into a new feminist
space. This series of events will open that space and allow for
discussion and debate about what feminism is in society today.

Dates for your diary: 29th February, 26th April, 24th May, 28th June,
04th October, 01st November, 06th December

Wed 29th February, 7pm
LOUDER NOW! LAUNCH EVENT
Summer School
http://www.starandshadow.org.uk/on/film/923
The night will see a special screening of SUMMER SCHOOL to spark a
discussion on what feminism is today and its future. After the panel
discussion, conversations can continue into the evening in the Star
and Shadow bar.
In the summer of 2010, while the media was buzzing about the 'return
of feminism', an activist training conference was held in Central
London by UK Feminista. Inexperienced activists of all ages and
backgrounds attended. When it seems like the rest of the world has got
it all wrong, this documentary follows young feminists looking for a
few lessons in how to make things right.
Guest Speakers: Marcie MacLellan (Summer School's director/producer),
Dr Carolyn Pedwell (GRG, Newcastle University), Dr Kate Chedgzoy (GRG,
Newcastle University).

don’t need you: The Herstory of Riot Grrrl
http://www.starandshadow.org.uk/on/film/916
don’t need you is a documentary film that tells the story of the
origins of Riot Grrrl in the American independent music scene of the
1990s, and how this feminist movement evolved into a revolutionary
underground network of education and self-awareness through music,
writing, activism, and women-friendly community.
Guest Speaker: Dr Julia Downes (Durham University). Dr Downes is a
specialist in contemporary queer feminist activist music cultures in
the UK including riot grrrl, Ladyfest and grassroots collectives.

Eat the Kimono
http://www.starandshadow.org.uk/on/film/918
EAT THE KIMONO is a brilliant documentary about Hanayagi Genshu, a
Japanese feminist and avant-garde dancer and performer, who has spent
her life defying her conservative culture's contempt for independence
and unconventionality.
Guest Speaker: Dr Nobuko Anan (Northumbria University). Dr Anan's main
research interests are modern and contemporary Japanese
theatre/performance and visual arts, and the way that they intersect
with nationhood and gender/sexuality in transnational contexts.

Privilege
http://www.starandshadow.org.uk/on/film/917
Yvonne Rainer's 6th feature is a genuinely subversive movie about
menopause. Out of a subject that has been denied on film by virtually
everybody, Rainer has fashioned a witty, risky work about sexual
identity and the unequal economies of race, gender and class.
Guest speaker: TBC

Blind Spot
http://www.starandshadow.org.uk/on/film/919
Claudia von Alemann's feature-length film, BLIND SPOT, is about an
historian who is researching the life of Flora Tristan, a 19th century
socialist and feminist rarely mentioned in conventional history books.
Guest Speaker: Professor Marie Cross (Newcastle University). Professor
Cross is the leading scholar of Flora Tristan studies. With the first
annotated translation of Tristan's journal and the first book ever
published on her correspondence, she has published and presented
papers in French History and in Gender Studies in a wide international
community.

Greenham Granny
http://www.starandshadow.org.uk/on/film/921
In 1929 Nell Logan took part in a youth peace conference in Moscow.
More than 50 years later she was among the women fighting against
Cruise missiles at Greenham Common. GREENHAM GRANNY is a film portrait
of Nell Logan, which shows her Greenham activities in the context of a
life-long struggle by interweaving scenes from Nell's life in the mid
80s with archive material reflecting her past and half a century of
history.
Guest Speaker: Professor Sasha Roseneil (Birkbeck University).
Professor Roseneil has carried out research on the Greenham Common
Women's Peace Camp and on its feminist and queer politics, which was
published as Disarming Patriarchy: Feminism and Political Action at
Greenham (Open University Press, 1995) and Common Women, Uncommon
Practices: The Queer Feminisms of Greenham (Cassell/ Continuum, 2000).
She also has met and interviewed Nell Logan.

http://www.starandshadow.org.uk/on/film/922
An epic portrait of the eloquent, award-winning Black, lesbian, poet,
mother, teacher and activist, Audre Lorde, whose writings - spanning

political visions of the century.

THE STAR AND SHADOW CINEMA
The Star And Shadow Cinema is run entirely by volunteer members, with
all members having a say in what we do and how we do it. Everyone who
comes to The Star and Shadow becomes a member: this is only £1 for a
calendar year.

Our aim is to show a truly independent programme of inspirational and
inspired films as cheaply as possible, as well as providing a venue
for artists and musicians of all varieties. We do not exist to make a
profit; our purpose is to provide a facility for programming the types
of films and events that do not happen at other venues around
Newcastle. These may be locally made or inspired films, art films,
political films, international films, gay and lesbian films, classic
films or independent cinema, local musicians, international musicians,
or artists and storytellers of all kinds.
