Dear All,
Thanks for your help providing some references and names of people who have worked on sound variation in Turkish. I have forwarded all the information to my students now.
Here is a summary of what I received....
It seems that the study of language variation in Turkish is quite an unexplored territory. Most of the works on sound variation that I received references on have focused on the voiceless and voices stops (/p, t, k/ and /b, d, g/).
Here is a list of the references received:
- 2004, Issue 165 of International Journal of the Sociology of Language was on Turkish sociolinguistics.
- 2006, Issue 181 of the same journal was on Cypriot Turkish.
- Idil Mentesoglu (2009) Intergenerational phonological change in the Famagusta dialect of Turkish Cypriots. International Journal of the Sociology of Language, 200.
- Leyla Ozmenekse (1997) wrote on (k) and [g] in Cyprus Turkish - a sociolinguistic case study on the same features in a different town in Northern Cyprus back in 1997.
- Burcu ONDER’s MSc dissertation was on VOT and realization of /k/ in Cappadocia region of Turkey.
A book: Turkish Dialects of Trabzon by Bernt Brendemoen offers a discussion to the synchronic and diachronic phonological developments of some Turkish Dialects.
Professor Robin Queen (University of Michigan) has worked on Turkish immigrants in Germany.
Thank you Malcah Yaeger-Dror, David Britain and Louward Allen Zubiri for the information provided. And, last but not least, thank you Sali Tagliamonte for having given me the great idea of asking for help to this list.
Respectfully yours,
