italian-studies: Scholarly discussions in any field of Italian studies
Dear colleagues,
We are pleased to announce the following conference to be held at the University of Birmingham in June 2012. The conference is kindly sponsored by ASMI and the Department of Gender and Sexuality Studies at Birmingham. We warmly welcome proposals for papers based around the CfP below.
Kind regards,
Alex Standen and Clare Watters.
Gendering impegno in Modern Italian Culture
A one-day conference at the University of Birmingham
22nd June 2012
Sponsored by ASMI and the Department of Gender and Sexuality Studies, Birmingham
Confirmed keynote speaker: Dr Ruth Glynn (University of Bristol)
The notion of impegno continues to provoke debate amongst academics researching contemporary Italian culture, and yet – be it by accident or by more conscious selection – critical work has tended to posit impegno as a predominantly male and, often, heteronormative domain. This one-day conference aims to challenge this assumption and to analyse more closely the fluid and fragmented nature of the term and the work of Italian intellectuals and cultural practitioners associated with it.
We are pleased to invite contributions of 20 minute long papers in English or Italian. Suggested topics include, but are not limited to, gender and sexuality in political and social commitment in the areas of Italian history, literature, politics, and film, cultural, gender and media studies.
Please send abstracts (250-300 words), along with paper title, affiliation and a short bio to the organisers Dr Alex Standen ([log in to unmask]) and Clare Watters ([log in to unmask]) by 10 February 2012. Speakers will be notified by 24 February 2012.
Several postgraduate bursaries will be available to PG speakers on a first come first served basis. Please signal your intention to apply for a bursary when sending your abstract.
