Research in Transport Geography: the next 40 years
Convenors: Professor Richard Knowles (Salford), Dr Lisa Davison (Ulster), Angela Curl (Aberdeen)
What is the future for transport geography research over the next 40 years? The Transport Geography Research Group celebrates its 40th Anniversary this year. During this time the research group’s achievements include: a successful international journal; books including Knowles et al (2008) Transport Geographies: Mobilities, Flows and Spaces, Blackwell, Oxford, and a continued and increasing presence at the RGS-IBG international conference. This workshop session will commence with a paper from Professor Peter Jones, chair of the TGRG. We then invite early career and more experienced transport geographers to discuss the next 40 years of transport geography.
Proposed discussion topics include:
* Imagining transport geography research in 40 years time
* Maintaining the influence of transport geography on policy and practice
* Identifying the ‘geography’ in transport geography. How do we make the distinction from broader transport studies?
* Transport geography: is it really synonymous with quantitative methods?
* Recognising complementarities and tensions with other ‘geographies’ and disciplines
* Communicating transport geography to undergraduates, what is our role?
To get the debate started interested members can suggest further topics of discussion prior to the conference. To do this please email the convenors or contribute to discussion on the TGRG website (www.abdn.ac.uk/tgrg).
