Culture Clash May Lie Behind the Beating of a Korean American Boy
Suspect in the case is called a deeply religious man who worked with other
teens. His arraignment is scheduled for February.

Paul Kim was seen as a deeply religious man who acted as a mentor to teens at
the Korean church in La Habra that he attended. He sometimes served as a
translator and took it upon himself to counsel youth he saw as troubled.
.
But authorities say that in at least one case, his "counseling" crossed a line.
Kim is accused of beating the 15-year-old son of a fellow church member with an
inch-wide metal pole until the boy's legs were bruised and swollen. The
misbehavior that prompted the alleged attack: The boy's parents believed he had
been smoking.
.
Some in the Korean immigrant community described the case as an extreme example
of the culture clash between first-generation parents and their Americanized
children, as well as changing views about corporal punishment in Korean
culture.
.
Kim, a 39-year-old mortgage broker, was arrested Dec. 7 at his Chino Hills home
on suspicion of felony child abuse.
.
The case came to light after an athletic coach at the 15-year-old victim's high
school in Irvine noticed the boy's injuries, according to a search warrant
served on Kim's home.
.
The victim's parents, who knew Kim through church, reportedly contacted him
after they found a lighter in their son's possession, San Bernardino County
sheriff's officials said. The boy's father, according to the search warrant,
told Kim about the "discipline problems" he was having with his son and asked
Kim to meet with the boy, who was not identified because of his age, according
to the search warrant.
.
The boy went to Kim's house in Chino Hills, where Kim questioned whether he was
using marijuana, according to the search warrant. When the boy denied it, again
according to the warrant, Kim began to hit him in the back of the legs with a
long pole, later determined to be the pole from a tall floor lamp. Sheriff's
officials said Kim struck the boy about 12 times, causing severe bruising.
.
Kim admitted to investigators that he had hit the boy. Investigators found four
poles two long and two short in a search of Kim's house.
.
The boy's parents have not been charged in the case, although a school official
filed a report with Child Protective Services. It is unclear whether or to
what extent his parents had instructed Kim to use force in disciplining their
son.
.
The boy's father, contacted at his home, declined to comment.
.
Sheriff's officials said investigators also were trying to determine whether
Kim, who does not have children, was involved in any other similar incidents.
.
Kim was released on $100,000 bail after his arrest. Attempts to reach him for
comment were unsuccessful. Kim has not been formally charged but is scheduled
for arraignment in February.

Man accused of cruelly punishing teen at parents' request
The Chino Hills man is arrested. He struck the boy 'approximately 12 times with
a metal pole, which was about 1 inch in diameter, on the back of the legs,
causing injuries,' officials say.

For teen program's chief, tough love may have turned criminal
The operator of a Pasadena 'boot camp' aimed at turning around troubled lives
with military-type discipline faces trial on charges of kidnapping and
extortion for his treatment of a girl and her family.

The surprise visit to Alberto Ruiz's house was swift.
.
Dress quickly, he was told. You're going to boot camp.
.
His parents, worried about his drug use and habit of skipping school, had
followed a friend's advice and called Kelvin McFarland.
.
Ruiz's behavior had earned him a spot in McFarland's Family First Growth Camp
in Pasadena, a place with a reputation for breaking gang-bangers and drug
addicts and turning them into law-abiding teens.
.
A former Marine who likes to be called "Sgt. Mac," McFarland founded the camp
two years ago and boasted that his tough-love tactics and military-strict
discipline were the perfect formula for reforming gang members, taming runaways
and getting through to troublemakers.
.
Ruiz, who is now 18, credits McFarland's intervention for helping him finish
school and quit drugs.
.
But authorities say McFarland's scared-straight approach crossed the line and
veered into criminal behavior earlier this year when he crossed paths with
another Pasadena teen.
.
Investigators allege that in May, McFarland was driving in Pasadena when he
spotted a girl walking along the street during school hours. He stopped to
question her, then handcuffed her, placed her in his car and told her to direct
him to a relative's home. At the relative's home, he demanded money from her
father to enroll the 14-year-old in his program. The girl's father mistook
McFarland for a truancy officer when he flashed a badge, Pasadena police said.
.
McFarland is facing trial on felony charges of kidnapping, extortion, false
imprisonment and child abuse, and unlawful use of a badge, a misdemeanor.
.
Now Pasadena police are investigating possible abuses that allegedly occurred
at a rival Pasadena boot camp where McFarland once worked. The Pasadena
Star-News recently published videos allegedly filmed in 2009 in which McFarland
can be seen yelling at teens, forcing them to gulp down water even as they
retch and vomit.

Tough Love Teen Camps: Lots of Tough, Little Love
ABC News

THE STATE OF FLORIDA tortured 14-year-old Martin Lee Anderson to death for
trespassing. The teen had been sentenced to probation in 2005 for taking a joy
ride in a Jeep Cherokee that his cousins stole from his grandmother. Later that
year, he crossed the grounds of a school on his way to visit a friend, a
violation of his probation. His parents were given a choice between sending him
to boot camp and sending him to juvenile detention. They chose boot camp,
believing, as many Americans do, that "tough love" was more likely to
rehabilitate him than prison.
Less than three hours after his admission to Florida's Bay County Sheriff's
Boot Camp on January 5, 2006, Anderson was no longer breathing. He was taken to
a hospital, where he was declared dead early the next morning.
