All,
Please find attached this week's job list. Before that, I have also
forwarded a message about upcoming elections for the SocRel committee.
Nominations are now open and I would encourage all of you to consider
applying.
Note that you will have to be a BSA member to stand on the committee. Do
email me if you have any questions.
Best wishes,
Mat.
----
At the 2011 AGM the Committee was asked to review nomination and election
procedures. With a deepening recession and fewer employment opportunities,
it is becoming increasingly important for early career scholars to gain
skills and the collaborative experiences that come with serving on an
academic committee, such as Socrel. While in previous years we were
fortunate to have any volunteers for committee positions, we sense now
that there is more interest and likely competition for places. We have
therefore created a process that mirrors the successful BSA procedures and
will result in open, democratic and transparent elections.
There will be four important components:
1. Call for nominations for specific positions.
2. Postal-ballot in case of more than one nominee.
3. Secure and confidential ballot counting.
4. Ratification of the results at the Annual General Meeting.
Call for nominations for specific positions
On November 15 nominations open. Please visit the Socrel web-site to
download a nomination form. The nominee must be a BSA and Socrel member at
the time of taking office; the proposer must be at least a Socrel member.
A space will be provided on the form for a nominee statement. Potential
nominees are encouraged to contact us informally if they require more
information about responsibilities and time commitments. Positions in 2012
will be Post-graduate Officer, Treasurer/Finance Officer, Conference
Officer and Internet Officer.
All nominations must be received by the Convenor, Sarah-Jane Page
([log in to unmask]), by the close of nominations on December
15. If only one nomination is received per position, that person will
assume to be elected pending ratification at the AGM in March 2012.
Postal-ballot in case of more than one nominee
If more than one person is nominated then an election will be held. We have
considered on-line options, but our Wild Apricot system is not configured
for this, and other systems are not considered sufficiently secure. The BSA
as a whole is investigating electronic options and we will review these
for further years. For now, it seems as postal ballot system is the most
reliable and secure. In mid-January a numbered form will be posted to
members with the names and vacant positions, with a self-addressed
envelope to the Company Secretary of the BSA to be returned by
mid-February.
Secure and confidential ballot counting
The BSA Company Secretary will count the votes and inform us of the
winner, or any related concerns.
Ratification of the results at the Annual General Meeting
Ratification is important to ensure there is a public accounting for the
transparency and integrity of the process. We can then also discuss the
efficacy of the system and consider changes for further years.
We estimate the postal cost may be around £100.00.
If you have any comments or advice, please let me know.
With best wishes
Abby Day
