That was an improvement on the Guardian's obit, Max, which never mentioned
the films! The one time encountered him was when he read to us in the 90s:
he was rather grand, and insisted on a taxi for the five minute walk to and
from the station, but was a superb reader. To good in fact, he included a
section of War Music which quoted Milton and Logue's brilliant rendition of
Milton's lines upstaged his own. One of the saddest moments I had in poetry
was the other year when a local 'poet' passed off a shambling rip-off of 'I
shall vote Labour' as a personal invention, to the applause of the
assembled toad-life.
