Many have been hauled away by forces.
Hard core remains; and much more in plenty.
This is a palimpsest of previous days
in sand and sock. The bird’s claw rope tangle
is something else, quite unrecognisable;
though it makes a bent lower s next to
at an angle to a large demotic r
of nearly empty beach. Densely heaped stones,
in a downstroke i without its dot, mark it
on one side, simply suggesting the other.
And then, behind the s, an upper F
or else it’s part of a gigantic letter J,
burlesque, baroque, beyond normal fancy.
One cannot read this. And the sea flows in both sides.
