ABOUT HUMANITIES IN LEEDS
The School of Humanities has one of the largest groups in philosophy and HPS in the UK, with more than thirty members of academic staff active in all the main areas of the subjects. It has an internationally renowned research profile, with particular strengths in history & philosophy of science, aesthetics, metaphysics, and ethics.
Leeds Philosophy ranks joint 6th in the UK and joint 38th in the world in the most recent Philosophical Gourmet Report (http://www.philosophicalgourmet.com/), an influential reputational survey of philosophy departments worldwide. Leeds also ranks highly in a number of speciality areas. In the most recent Research Assessment Exercise 65% of our research was rated "world class" or "internationally excellent" (matching the percentage of other leading UK philosophy departments, such as Oxford and Cambridge).
For students aiming for an academic career in philosophy or HPS, study at Leeds has proved to be an effective route to success. A significant proportion of our MA students obtain funding for PhD study and many of our PhD graduates have secured academic positions in the UK, US, continental Europe, and beyond. We place a strong emphasis on professional training and development, and postgraduates benefit from the particular assistance of our Postgraduate Employment Advisor.
