I have been alerted to the way the NHS Smokefree website handles this issue, apparently it's legal and I've been told doesn't not ruin GA. I'm particularly keen to see a solution to this as our GA stats generally 'seem' to produce more sensible data than our web logs.

Subject: Re: What's everyone doing to avoid breaching the "Cookie law"
We're lucky, or I think we are. The only cookies we use are Google Analytics. So we looked at http://www.ico.gov.uk/Global/privacy_statement.aspx and saw what they do. And, unless you can see where we differ, we adopted their form of words at http://dartmouthmuseum.org/privacy-and-cookies.html regarding cookies.
We don't collect any personal data at all on the site.
