The West Yorkshire Archaeology Advisory Service is seeking a Historic Landscape Characterisation Officer to work at their Wakefield office.
The post is to replace a departing officer and is for a period of four months initially to complete Phase 1 of a Historic Landscape Characterisation project for West Yorkshire funded by English Heritage. It is anticipated that this work will run seamlessly into Phase 2, which is projected to run to December 2014.
The role involves the collection & interpretation of data from map, aerial photographs & archival sources, leading to the identification & mapping of historic landscape character areas in W. Yorkshire. These are to be mapped digitally using MapInfo GIS software. This work is expected to lead to the analysis & interpretation of the results and the production & dissemination of reports & strategies for the improved management of the historic environment.
Applicants should have extensive GIS experience (preferably with MapInfo); a degree in Archaeology or a closely related subject such as Historical Geography; be IT literate; have demonstrable experience in the interpretation of aerial photographs & historic map evidence; hold a full driving licence; & be skilled at interpreting different & varying sources of historical information. They will also need report-writing, communication & team-working skills & be able to work to strict deadlines.
