Netervile is certainly not Netherfield in East Sussex, and seems to be
fairly exclusively Irish; they were raised to the Irish peerage as Viscounts
Netterville in 1622.
Netherfield near Battle (not an ancient parish but a hundred) is Nadrefeld -
open place infested by snakes - EPNS Sx 471

Thank you all very much! Richard, you are right, I did not know it was a
place-name - I was over-influenced by the previous one I'd been looking at
being of WILLI DE NETERVILE, also Isle of Wight, which I hope is Netherfield
in Sussex (or Notts, or Milton Keynes?)
(http://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/434932). (Any opinions on
Netervile of course gladly received).
John, I very much like your suggestion of Chaumpeneis, which seems the
closest. I'll add all suggestions to the record. It is wonderful to have all
these collective brains to consult! - Helen
