Special SIEM-Session: Management Geography – Embedding COPs in changing
global urban networks
Session Organisers: Rolf D. Schlunze (Ritsumeikan University), Elmar Kulke
(Humboldt Universität Berlin), Lech Suwala (Humboldt Universität Berlin)
Management Geography is a relatively new approach which evolved out of
corporate geography or so called Betriebsgeographie and international
management science. Relational embeddedness of managers and communities of
practice are at the core of the discussion that constitutes a new approach
with high practical substance for economic geographers and offers a key to
real world problems of managers. This actor-centered approach is based on
locational adjustment and preferences, networking behaviour and innovation
creation practices of managers with an international horizon. In a
globalizing world geography knowledge inspires managers to pursue spatial
fragmented strategies in order to balance cooperation and competition in
different economic environments and business settings. Recent
transformations of the economic logic due to financial and technological
development processes but also to set-backs by catastrophic events caused
shifts in urban hierarchies that call for an continues adjustment in
management practices. We invite scholars to our special session on Spaces
of International Economy and Management (SIEM) to present their research
providing theoretical foundations, methodological tools and empirical
evidence. See also www.siemrg.org
