Dear Friends:
The Euthanasia Prevention Coalition (EPC) wishes you a merry Christmas and a happy new year. At this time of year we celebrate with family, we think about the gifts we have received and we give to those in need. We also think about what is coming our way in the new year. Please consider making a Christmas donation<http://www.euthanasiaprevention.on.ca/Donations.htm> to EPC.
The petition campaign against euthanasia and assisted suicide in Canada has been incredibly succesfully. Please send the remaining petitions to the office next week. The petition can still be signed online<http://www.euthanasiaprevention.on.ca/signonline.htm>.
The Carter case<http://alexschadenberg.blogspot.com/2011/10/carter-case-seeks-to-legalize.html> in Vancouver, that is intended to legalize euthanasia and assisted suicide in Canada, ended on December 16. EPC had intervener standing in the Carter case<http://alexschadenberg.blogspot.com/2011/10/euthanasia-prevention-coalition-granted.html>. We argued that the law is a necessary protection for all Canadians<http://alexschadenberg.blogspot.com/2011/11/carter-case-and-assisted-suicide-recipe.html>. We are waiting for Justice Smith to release her decision.
The Leblanc case<http://www.alexschadenberg.blogspot.com/2011/11/assisted-suicide-case-launched-in.html>, which seeks to strike down Canada's assisted suicide law was filed in a Quebec court<http://alexschadenberg.blogspot.com/2011/11/assisted-suicide-case-launched-in.html>. EPC will be seeking intervener standing in this case in January. Once again, the cost to intervene in a court case is prohibiteve and we need you financial support to make this possible. Link to donate<http://www.euthanasiaprevention.on.ca/Donations.htm>.
When it rains it pours.
Yesterday we learned that the Supreme Court of Canada has agreed to hear the Rasouli case<http://www.theglobeandmail.com/life/health/end-of-life/supreme-court-to-hear-rasouli-end-of-life-case/article2281641/?utm_medium=Feeds%3A%20RSS%2FAtom&utm_source=Life&utm_content=2281641>. The Rasouli case<http://www.alexschadenberg.blogspot.com/2011/05/rasouli-case-who-has-right-to-decide-to.html> is seeking to give doctors the right to unilaterally withdraw life-sustainting treatment without consent or even against the wishes of the person or their substitute decision maker. EPC successfully intervened in the Rasouli case<http://www.alexschadenberg.blogspot.com/2011/06/victory-for-individual-rights-doctors.html> at the Ontario Court of Appeal who unanimously decided that doctors are required to obtain consent before withdrawing life-sustaining treatment or care. The Supreme Court of Canada needs to uphold the decision of the Ontario Court of Appeal.
Massachusetts will be the focus in the United States as the November 2012 election draws close and the work to oppose the Massachusetts assisted suicide initiative become our focus. Link to the website for the disability rights group - Second Thoughts<http://www.second-thoughts.org/>.
EPC is distributing the report from the Parliamentary Committee on Palliative and Compassionate Care<http://pcpcc-cpspsc.com/report> and the book Keep Breathing<http://loveundefiled.blogspot.com/2011/10/book-review-keep-breathing-by-adam.html>. EPC is selling the video recording of the Third International Symposium on Euthanasia and <http://alexschadenberg.blogspot.com/2011/06/third-international-symposium-on.html> Assisted Suicide<http://alexschadenberg.blogspot.com/2011/06/third-international-symposium-on.html> for $50 for the complete set or $80 for two sets. If you want to receive one of these items please indicate that with your donation.
The cost to intervene in a court case is prohibitive. We completed two court interventions in 2011 and we are assured of being involved with at least three court interventions in 2012. We require your support for us to be successful. Link to donate or become a member<http://www.euthanasiaprevention.on.ca/Donations.htm>.
