From the NASA News Summary
Preservation Strategy Said To Be Needed For Apollo Sites.
In an op-ed for Space News (12/6, Subscription Publication), Lisa Westwood and Beth O'Leary, co-founders of the Apollo 11 Preservation Task Force, write about NASA new voluntary guidelines for protecting Apollo sites on the moon. They called the rules a "critical step in recognizing and preserving the historical significance of the Apollo missions." Now, a "preservation strategy" is needed, which would entail "the development of international guidelines for responsible visitation, which balance the competing needs of public access to historical sites with the preservation of a very important part of our history. The NASA guidelines are more technical in nature, providing guidance on how to minimize the physical impacts of future landers on significant sites." They note that "unregulated experiments and those without protocols can have impacts, which can cripple outcomes."
