The Swiss Center for Affective Sciences (SCAS) invites applications for a position as
Postdoc (80%) for 2 years in the area of Emotions, Language and Culture
Description: The successful applicant will be responsible for the interdisciplinary research focus
on Emotions, Language and Culture, in particular the interdisciplinary study of emotion words and
emotion concepts across cultures and through historical periods within the realm of the National
Center of Competence in Research "Affective Sciences".
This includes: a) Encouraging communication of researchers from different disciplines inside and
outside the NCCR who might be interested in the role of language and culture in the study of
emotion by organizing colloquia/workshops, b) initiating publications on the topics covered by
the focus from a multidisciplinary perspective, and c) high-level disciplinary research activity
related to the topic of the focus, including submitting applications for external funding.
The applicant should a) be interested in conducting research on the way emotion concepts are
coded in language and how they vary across cultures and historical periods, b) possess an
openness towards different disciplinary approaches and research methods, and c) be motivated to
excel in his/her specific research discipline. The successful applicant will be given the opportunity
to collaborate internationally and to present the research results at international conferences.
Requirements: Candidates must: hold a PhD; have good knowledge of the relevant literature in
their discipline; have at least a basic knowledge of linguistic methods and concepts, with an
emphasis on semantics/semiotics; have an interest and the necessary personality to do
interdisciplinary work; have good knowledge of English and French; be able to coordinate and
collaborate with a large group of people (soft skills). Preference will be given to scholars with
confirmed research experience on emotion in linguistics (cognitive/ historical/ anthropological),
anthropology, classics, or other disciplines directly involved in the study of language.
Start: Review of applications will begin on February 15th, 2012 and continue until the position is
filled. Start date as soon as possible (to be agreed with the candidate).
