PhD Studentship: Policy Research Unit in Cancer Awareness, Screening and Early Diagnosis
A PhD studentship is available within the Policy Research Unit in Cancer Awareness, Screening and Early Diagnosis, funded by the Department of Health. The Unit is spread across seven centres. Possible projects, with likely first supervisor and location of the project, include:
• Methods and applications in evaluation of the national breast and bowel cancer screening programmes (Stephen Duffy, Queen Mary University of London; email: [log in to unmask])
• Poor cancer survival in older people: the role of cancer awareness and beliefs and socioeconomic status (Lindsay Forbes, Kings College London; email [log in to unmask])
• The potential for primary care and GP commissioning consortia to achieve earlier cancer diagnosis and reduction in cancer inequalities (Una MacLeod, Hull York Medical School; email [log in to unmask] )
• Misclassification of tumour stage and cancer survival estimation (Bernard Rachet, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine; email [log in to unmask])
• Lead time and other influences on cancer survival in relation to awareness (Peter Sasieni, Queen Mary University of London; email [log in to unmask])
The project will involve collaboration between the participating institutes of the Policy Research Unit, and will include some general health policy research training. The candidate should have a good first degree in a relevant discipline. A Master’s degree would be an advantage. The studentship covers fees and stipend for three years, and is anticipated to start in October 2012. Candidates should send a letter of application and curriculum vitae to:
