Tread length should be depth of tread or same as the horizontal going as tread width is the mximum distance between diagonal strings. It is not a usual term used even in the UK. I am a chartered building surveyor but also a Master Carpenter and spent many decades building stairs of all types and layout.
Hope this helps and if I am wrong please enlighten me becasue it is not a term usually used in stair building in UK

Subject: Usage of terms: tread length
I would be grateful if UK colleagues would indicate what tread length means
Thanks in anticipation.
