A late comment. Donald this looks like weathered bronze. Perhaps you should
consult the district archaeologists may the Romans were there mining ?

Subject: This week's mystery object
The photographed objects were recovered from 2.5 m beneath playing fields at
a site where the fill material is predominantly colliery spoil. The first
photograph shows them freshly exposed, the second after being stored for a
week. I have them in a vial if it is worth sending them for analysis. I
haven't tried breaking one yet. All ideas welcome!
