An opportunity to take part in a programme of lectures in Advanced Preservation
UCL Department of Information Studies is offering a selection of lectures during January – March 2012, presented by leading figures in the preservation of archive and library collections
https://www.ucl.ac.uk/infostudies/teaching/modules/instg002/
The purpose of this course is to build upon and extend the study of preservation issues affecting archive and library collections. To ensure that participants get the full benefit of the analysis and discussions, it is advised that students need a good feel for, and basic grounding in, preservation management and planning. To assist those joining this course it is recommended that the following preparatory reading be undertaken:
1. A general awareness of the issues covered by both:
• British Standards Institution, Recommendations for storage and exhibition of archival documents, BS 5454: 2000
• National Archives, Standard for record repositories, The National Archives, first edition, (2004)
2. Forde, H., Preserving Archives, Facet Publishing (2007)
3. British Standards Institution and the Collections Trust, Code of practice for cultural collections management, PAS 197:2009
This course will analyse in greater detail the challenges inherent in preservation management, conservation programming and the collection needs of library and archival material to include both photographic media and digital records. A range of guest speakers will introduce many of the topics, which will include:
• the management of book collections – assessing damage, cleaning, handling and book structure
• a holistic approach to moulds and pests – exploring the impacts on collections, buildings and people
• a detailed description of photographic and film processes and the challenges inherent in their preservation
• a practical session on digital preservation utilising current digital management tools
• an assessment of recent archive building project specifications and the experience of a senior archivist as project manager
The course also includes two visits to:
• The Stanley Kubrick Archive at the University of the Arts
• The British Library Sound Archive
Sessions will include practical work on case studies, a simple week-by-week research task and group discussions.
By the end of the course, students will have an in depth knowledge of preservation principles and will be able to formulate both conservation and preservation programmes to address the needs of both library and archival collections in the full range of formats. The course builds on the content of the archive module on preservation, but it is not essential to have taken that first.
