> This workshop is designed to provide support, advice and guidance for all doctoral students who are going to carry out fieldwork in a developing country. The aims are to bring postgraduate research students involved in fieldwork in developing countries together to share learning and experience about conducting fieldwork in the developing world, to provide an opportunity for reflection on the issues that arise when doing research overseas e.g. methodological, ethical, cultural, and to encourage an interchange of ideas and advice between British students and international students.

> After completion of this workshop, students are expected to have gained: a critical understanding of the ethical issues and practicalities of doing fieldwork in developing countries and emerging economies; an appreciation of good practice in carrying out fieldwork in developing countries economies; and an ability to reflect and think critically about the conduct of research in developing countries and emerging economies.

> The workshop leader is Professor Nina Laurie, Newcastle University, and other participants include Dr Suzanne Speak, Newcastle University, Dr Katy Jenkins, Northumbria University and Dr Colin McFarlane, Durham University, and a panel of postgraduate students who will give talks on carrying out fieldwork in South Asia, Latin America and Africa. > The cost of the workshop will be £30 per applicant, and applications to attend should be sent to Amanda Chambers ([log in to unmask]) by 12 noon, Friday, 9th December. Please include name, contact details, institutional affiliation, whether you are ERSC-funded and the title of your doctoral thesis. Applicants from outside of the North East will be informed as to whether they can attend as soon as possible after they submit their application.
