Hi David,
I don't think that there is just one reason why people are drawn to modern Paganisms. As you say, some are "party Pagans" who join because their friends do, or in order to attend festivals where a certain amount of symbolic inversion takes place. (See Sarah Pike's wonderful book _Earthly Bodies, magical Selves_ for more on Pagan festival culture.) Others have had life-long spiritual experiences that just don't fit the parameters of mainstream religions, and in fact in some cases are stigmatized as deviant by the mainstream. Others still might be attracted to the feminist and environmentalist ethos of some forms of Paganism. Then there are those -- in increasing numbers -- who seek a connection to the spiritual practices of their ethnic ancestors.
I see modern Paganisms as reclaiming a current of esoterism and spiritual experience that has existed in the West since ancient times, but has alternated between going underground and surfacing when the social climate was right. This is one of those periods.

Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions. I have had the chance to have a look at your book and from what I can understand you are defining modern paganism as an attempt to revive a spirituality that has been submerged and that is an archetypal sort of spiritual expression of Western culture with a more modern and eclectic view of what religion's function is now. If I have that right then it is a very erudite description of neo-paganism and one that more of its adherents should be made aware of. So if that is so then the reason that people that are leaving traditional faiths would be drawn to it because it is a truer expression of what they feel to be spiritual. A certain amount of people must join for peer group reasons, i.e. being a witch is a celebrity trend, but many are looking to paganism as a religion that addresses modern concerns such as the environment and gender or sexuality based discrimination.
Do you think that part of Wicca's appeal is that it is a more focused kind of new age spirituality than are offered by other practices?
