[This message is mainly relevant to people who get VAR-L in daily digest form. Unless you have had a problem with certain messages not being visible to you, you can probably ignore it, and sorry for the spam.]
At least once recently, we've had the problem that some messages have not been visible when they arrived as part of a digest format - instead of the messagesent by the sender, people got a note that said something like 'This message contained invalid MIME fields and could not be processed.'. The problem arises because digests are sent in plain-text format only, whereas the messages affected by this problem were originally sent in HTML format.
I chose the plain-text-only format for digests because it's possible that some people receive their e-mail in a format that doesn't like HTML (older e-mail clients would be like this). Therefore:
For the best chance that everyone will be able to read your messages, please make sure they are sent in plain text format.
How to do this:
- If you use Thunderbird:
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Plain_text_e-mail_%28Thunderbird%29#Send_both_plain_text_and_HTML
- If you use Gmail or Googlemail: at the top of the message compose window, there is the option to switch between plain text and HTML.
- I don't know about other clients - sorry!
Thanks to Charlie from the JISCMail helpline for the Thunderbird advice.
