School of Education
Durham University’s School of Education is the leading centre for educational research in the North East of England. In the last Research Assessment Exercise (RAE 2008) we consolidated our international reputation, with 85% of our research being classed as internationally excellent and 20% as world leading (ranked 6th nationally).
The School has a broad portfolio of teaching, with a good profile of initial teacher training (ITT), both for quality and for recruitment, with approximately 600 full-time trainees on undergraduate (BA Primary) and postgraduate (PGCE) programmes. At the primary ITT level, we operate an innovative partnership model with placement schools for teacher training, praised as a model of good practice. We have excellent links to the wider community through educational outreach, especially school-based partnerships. We have a number of part-time staff from schools contributing to our professional programmes.
We also run a non-ITT undergraduate Educational Studies degree co-operatively with other departments across the University. At the postgraduate level, we run a range of masters’ (MAQTS, MAEd, MA Educational Research and MSc Educational Assessment) and taught doctorate (EdD) programmes as well as research degrees (PhD).
Our teaching benefits from our research at every level, and we believe our academic and research staff, with our undergraduate and postgraduate students, generate a dynamic and focused intellectual community. Our courses are highly regarded and this has ensured a diverse student intake from across the world. We take pride in integrating international students into the academic life of the School, particularly during the summer when we run an International Postgraduate Programme as a Summer School. Durham graduates are in high demand and have an excellent record of post-graduation employment. Our well established professional doctorate (EdD) recruits the greatest number of overseas students of any University in England (about 18 EdD students graduated last year). We have both 1+3 ESRC recognition and CASE-studentship recognition (the only HEI education department in the North East in this position) and show a steady increase in the number of applicants for research degrees, particularly for the full-time PhD. We currently have 43 academic staff and about 1000 students across all levels.
