I forward striking pictures of some of John Lockwood Kipling's work, still
to be seen on the Victorian buildings in Bombay, kindly sent to us by Brian
Bach.
With best wishes,

Subject: J.L. Kipling's Bombay Work
Dear Jane,
Attached are photos from the 1980s I took of J.L.K.'s work (or of his
school) in Bombay's grand public sites.
1. Crawford Market façade. Wm. Emerson, arch. (also designed the Muir
College in Allahabad and the Raj's great climax: the Victoria Memorial in
Calcutta).
2. Crawford interior, main hall. I believe JLK designed the delightful
polychrome Gothic fountain.
3. & 4. JLK's well-known bas reliefs above the main Crawford entrances.
5. The Bombay Municipal Corporation, F.W. Stevens, arch. I'm not at all sure
if JLK had a hand in this mighty building's décor, but it is certainly
uniform with the general tenor of the neighbourhood.
6. Victoria Terminus, also by Stevens. 'Stupendous' might be an inadequate
word for it! Right across the square from the Municipal Bldg.
7. VT entrance façade. Again, I'm not aware of JLK's specific involvement
with this, one of the most impressive railway stations in the world, but I
think the School of Art was indeed engaged in the project.
8. VT office block façade. Key officials in the railway's management are
honoured with portraits.
9. VT courtyard. Note the frieze of faces above the arches. Sort of like a
JLK sketchbook.
10. VT booking hall entrance. The playful gargoyles strike me as a
particularly (J. Lockwood) Kiplingesque touch!
11. VT gargoyle close-up. One of the beasts (overlooking man) of India!
All best,
Brian
