HARMONI =AD the first light integral field spectrograph for the E-ELT
D.Phil studentship at the University of Oxford starting Oct 2012
The European Extremely Large Telescope
(E-ELT,http://www.eso.org/sci/facilities/eelt) will be the world's
largest visible/infrared telescope. With a primary mirror diameter of
39m, it will have more collecting area than ALL the world=B9s telescopes
built to date. The HARMONI instrument
(http://astroweb1.physics.ox.ac.uk/instr/HARMONI/) is a
visible and near-infrared integral field spectrograph concept, that has
been picked as one of two first light instruments at the E-ELT. Oxford
Astrophysics is expected to play a leading role in the design and
construction of this workhorse first-light instrument, with N. Thatte as
Principal Investigator. This project provides an opportunity to be involved
from the outset in building the key ground based astronomy facility of this
decade.
Topic: Science with HARMONI
We are looking for a bright, motivated D.Phil. student to explore, through
detailed simulations, a range of science programs that form the key science
goals for HARMONI. Through analysis of the resulting data cubes, this
project aims to quantitatively demonstrate the transformational potential
of the E-ELT. In particular, you will explore sensitivity limits and
expected accuracies of observations, folding in diverse parameters such as
the adaptive optics performance, instrument specifications and cosmological
simulations. You will also study synergies with other key facilities. This
project will help develop the skills to analyse complex systems.
