Personally I use Refworks instead which I find is well worth the
half-hour I spent on getting started, and the 2.0 version looks good
although I'm choosing to use Classic until I finish my current piece
of work. I like the fact that if your institution has subscribed to
the option, you can have a permanent alumni account (although it's a
minor faff moving it over). It's all online so you can access it
anywhere but there is an option to back-up to your own hard drive(s)
when you want to.
I did look at both briefly before I picked, and I thought Refworks was
clearer for the absolute beginner, but I know lots of people like
Endnote, and have heard that it integrates well with Word (which I
don't always use, so that's not so useful to me). I have not tried
Zotero or Mendeley yet, I do like the idea of something that lets you
organise the actual pdfs etc as well as just the citations.
You can import Endnote references into Refworks quite easily, and I
wouldn't be surprised if the same wasn't true the other way but I
don't know. Our library catalogue exports to Refworks, Web of Science
exports easily to both - they have recently made it more automatic for
Refworks than it was before (Endnote was already automated fully).
I have had to only occasionally very minorly tweak exported references
in my bibliographies created with Refworks, and haven't found a
systematic problem such as that reported by Lisa for Endnote (or not
yet, anyway, there is still time!).
