Our Mothers Stayed in Auckland
(Letters Old and New)
Lesley to her mother: Sept '73,
London. Friday we went to that film,
'Blanche', beautiful but gloomy -
four out of five dead by the end.
As we came out the gloom was cured -
someone said 'Lesley' quite quietly.
I peered a moment and it was Max!
He recognized me after ten years,
a boost to my morale.
Dear Max, I'm sending this, part
of hundreds of letters Mother kept
from '63 onwards. Love, Lesley
Dear Lesley, How touching for me
to read this almost forty years on!
I wish I could remember that moment!
Maybe my weekly aerogramme home
mentioned our chance meeting.
My mother kept them all, left them for me
(if only I knew where I put them).
Yours, I see, are with you still.
Love from Max
Melbourne, Nov '11
