Tim, Andrew, ta for your responses.
My initial response was, in its origin, fairly close to Andrew's, though I
have somewhere along the line lost my hostility to religion per se (at the
same time as, if possible, increasing my antipathy to religious believers
who want society to act upon their beliefs.
There is a possibility that _salvation_ is here used in the way that some
use _inspiration_; and I tend to say _God bless you_ when someone is
especially helpful to me or _Christ!_ when someone has been unusually
dumb. We do all have bits of lizard in us.
Anyway, till we get an answer, not much point in spending time. I'll go
off somewhere quiet and innovate now
