Alle Brider & Schwester
They've put up a sound-stage
for me to sing on -
me and the choir I'm in.
It's in the park's west corner,
a pleasant walk from our place.
Just before four p.m.
we'll stroll along,
the soprano and I,
weather permitting,
to join the other twelve.
Last year's event got called off,
thanks to the heavy rain.
Saturday's forecast's promising,
so this year's bodes well
for all the choirs and groups.
The whole jamboree's
billed as multicultural -
and the name of our choir?
it's as multi as can be:
United Nations of Song.
From our little repertoire
we've chosen one in Latin,
one in English - Australian -
with clacking sticks suggesting
Aboriginal outback
spirituality,
one in Yiddish - 'Alle Brider',
to which we've added
a new verse, 'alle schwester'.
The main stage MC
is to be Prince Ravi Raja;
on first is Steel Dragon,
then Welcome to Country,
that's the new tradition
on public occasions,
an Aboriginal bit.
Next a lion dance -
whose we've yet to learn;
balleto folkloristico,
the Greek Elderly Citizens,
'Ya Hui performers',
an Iranian ensemble,
linedancers
(are they ethnic?),
'Sound of Drums and Sori',
Arte Kanela,
La Voce Della Luna
(a choir we've heard -
fondly known as the
Italian Nonnas),
Chinese Senior Citizens,
Melbournaires Harmony,
then us! just fifteen minutes.
At length - the One Voice Choir
first time together, unrehearsed.
The day ends with
Ethiopian Circus
featuring Afro Habesha.
Your guess is a good as mine.
Culinary delights:
Indian curries,
Chinese stir-fries, and -
Aussie barbecue.
Altogether we expect
well before the end to be
quite multicultured out.
