Hi,
All screening has to be performed in a way that the results are
reproducible, such as the same environmental factors every time
audiometry is carried out etc. If the individual loses air through their
nose when they blow out then the results will not be accurate and
varying amounts of air will be lost with each test performed.
Kind Regards

As we do not do diagnostic testing but only screening, I would think
that nose clips may have a place if you have some doubts about a low
reading perhaps but if the readings are within normal limits do we care
if nose clips were worn or not.
As you said for consistency, the general lack of wearing nose clips is
likley to be the nomr not the other way round.

Hi Debbie,
I recently attended a great ARTP course at Uni hosp North Staffs. The
use of nose clips for all spirometry was recommended to obtain
repeatable and comparable results. The individual can also pinch their
nose if preferred although I find that this isn't always effective.

Lesley

Subject: [OCC-HEALTH] spirometry
Hi everyone
I have spoken with a respiratory nurse speciaist this morning who is
telling me that anyone undertaking spirometry testing should wear a nose
clip whilst being tested. I have done a bit of reaearch and cannot find
anyone who was specifically taught to use the nose clips.
Has anyone got any comments or assistance?
thanks
Debbie
