My experience of this is that such conditions take long time to resolve,
if ever. There is also usually a distinct psychological overlay, which
can be helped with CBT (fear of pain can be the most debilitating
thing). All of mine were ultimately referred to pain management clinics
with varying degrees of success, only one out of a fair few ever came
back to work but that was after very long term absence and longer
periods of time on restricted duties. The latter case was also a long
time ago - I doubt that he would be accomodated in todays job market.
I think it also depends how he is affected, which bits of his body, how
the injury occurred and what else is involved. Aware that there is often
a vascular element which complicates matters further. If the initial
injury was caused by work that adds another layer of complication -
good luck!

Hi,
Does anyone have any experience of making recommendations for an
employee who tells me that he has been diagnosed with complex regional
pain syndrome? I am currently waiting for consultant and physio reports
(both private through BUPA). The individual is currently not doing any
form of manual work and I am finding it hard to make recommendations
regarding timescales etc. Does/can manual work make symptoms worse? It
is getting more difficult for the manager to find none manual tasks (FYI
he was already back at work doing these prior to referral).
As always sharing of your experiences and thoughts will be greatly
appreciated.
Regards
Lesley
