Hi list
Really interesting thread. I'd agree with concerns over FA's using Steristrips - even trained nurses don't always apply them correctly (don't get me started on the recent client we had who had attended A&E with self applied Steri Strips, and nurse applied glue, OVER said Steri Strips...)
I think that since Boots & other chemists started selling SteriStrips, Hydrocolloids, TubiGrips etc, self-treatment has increased, for good or bad.
On the same note, any thoughts on burn spray/gel in food prep areas?
Many thanks
Lucy

Dear list,
Really in agreement with Neil's response, our out of hours first aiders
are trained to put on steri strips for slightly deeper wounds, but this
is only as a temporary measure during transit to hospital for more
appropriate care.

Hi Tracy
You are very justified with your concerns. I feel if a wound is deep
enough to
warrant steri-strips then it should be assessed properly. Full training
would
need to be given regarding there application. There are also different
types of
steri-strip which again are suited to different wound locations.
I would also be concerned that steri-strip application would be looked
as a
quick fix solution and serious wounds may be missed. As a qualified
Emergency
Nurse Practitioner I know steri-strips are not the best form of closure
and may
need the help of an appropriate dressing to facilitate their
effectiveness.
Kind Regards
Neil Poole
