Urban regeneration is the process by which inner-city areas perceived as undesirable or run-down are rendered attractive for investment, with the long-term aim of increasing economic productivity, generating employment, and reducing social problems. It is widely assumed that the arts – and artistic workers – can play a key role in this process. But is that always the case? And is regeneration always a good thing – either for the arts or for the traditional occupants of the areas being regenerated? This panel brings together leading researchers who are breaking new ground in their investigations into the relationship between regeneration, work and the arts and cultural industries.
