With aoplogies for cross-posting:
An online version of ‘Who Next…?', the popular guide to children’s fiction designed to help young people explore the world of reading, has just been launched by LISU at Loughborough University.
The web resource – whonextguide.com – includes listings for over 750 children’s authors to help signpost young readers to new material when they have exhausted the works of their favourite writers. The listings, which can also be found in the fourth edition of the ‘Who Next?’ book, will be regularly updated by the editors Viv Warren and Mary Yardley.
Viv and Mary are experienced children’s librarians and have been able to draw on a team of expert advisers with first-hand knowledge of children’s reading to compile their lists. Authors who write short stories and those whose titles are available as ebooks and talking books are identified, and information included on selected titles and series. Where an author has his or her own website, a link is provided so that readers can quickly find more information about their favourites.
Who Next…? in print was developed primarily as an information source for parents, teachers and librarians to help encourage children to enjoy reading. The whonextguide.com – a companion site to the online guide to adult fiction authors, www.whoelsewriteslike.com – has been designed with the child user in mind, so that it is easy to navigate and follow a path from old favourites to new authors and more challenging reading.
Both the book and the website are arranged in four age groups corresponding to the Key Stages: 5-7 years, 8-11 years, 12-14 years and 14+ years. There are links between the age groups, and information on genres and themes and prize winners.
Try before you buy, with a 14-day free trial at www.whonextguide.com. Individual subscriptions start at £5, with multi-user licences available for schools and libraries.
