When it started a Word document was made available or sent round, I
forget which.
Each year I hack at the previous year's version until I'm tired of
it, and send it along to my appraiser as the current year.
It was one of the horrid Word docs made by people who like drawing
boxes becuase they think layout is more impoortant than content, but
as time has gone on it has appraoched plain text.
It has headings and sections.
Now, if someone were to set me the task of establishing a system for
random GPs to write a structured document which was available to their
arbitrarily selected appraiser to view, comment on and so on, I'd be
faced with two choices:-
1. Write from scratch a system which required each GP to type each
year into each box... and which allowed each appraiser to read one box
at a time and type into another box after they had done so, and if I
were feeling really mean toward them, after they had banished the text
they were commenting on from their screen; and then try to keep the
thing running, secure and persuade the NHS each year to extract the
money from the users to pay me for my cleverness...
or
2. Tell people to complete a word processor document and upload it
to Google Docs, then share it to their appraiser.
Being busy and lazy and in favour of extreme reliability and moderate
security against _the most plausible threats_ I would obviously pick
2, however if I were a salesman for an under-employed software
development firm selling to a civil servant or NHS manager with no
technical knowledge, little awareness of the world outside the NHS,
and an urge to build an empire for themselves and their masters, I'd
pick the first version.
ANd if I could get away with it I'd pick another company to replace it
after say 3 years.
I've not checked, but does either of those alternatives seem slightly
similar to whatthose of you using "toolkits" have had foisted upon
you?
