Hello,
I am in the process of creating the syllabus for a new online class in Disability and Social Policy with a focus on global/comparative policies and on Southeast Asia (where the students are located, I am in the U.S.).
If you have created such a class and would be willing to share your syllabus or reading list I would be very grateful. The course description is very broad and includes the five purposes below.
In addition, I am looking for readings that introduce the concept of social policy, discuss the formation or analysis of social policy in developed or developing countries, discuss models for implementing and monitoring the CRPD or domestic law, compare disability law and policy, discuss the role of self-advocates, NGOs or governmental bodies in social policy, readings on specific social policies such as education, employment, healthcare, emergency management, social security or welfare benefits, etc. from Southeast Asian countries or a comparative/global perspective, and readings that discuss factors such as economic or cultural factors that influence policy formation, etc. The course is pretty-open at the moment in terms of content, so I am trying to assemble a set of readings that are balanced between the developed and developing countries in regards to their social polices that impact persons with disabilities and go from there in putting it all
together.
This course has five purposes:
1. To help you understand how social policy affects human services and the lives of people with disabilities.
2. To give you an appreciation of the complexity of social change and social policy.
3. To provide you with an understanding of the social, economic, historical, political, cultural, and legal forces that shape policy and practices in the field of disabilities.
4. To expose you to current issues, controversies, and trends in the field of disabilities.
5. To teach you how to read and interpret historical documents, court cases, media reports, and other materials.
Any suggestions on content or readings are appreciated.
Regards,
Cindy Smith
