Get a head start! Get an e-mentor!
The Section for New Professionals was formed in November 2010 to build relationships amongst those new to the ARM profession and represent member interests on the job market; qualifying routes into the profession and… anything else our members were concerned about.
One area for improvement we identified based on our own experiences was that even though there were basic sources of information available on the web about how to become an archivist or records manager, there were few sources of information about the experience of that process, or answering questions unique to the individual. Therefore, we have developed a peer e-mentoring programme between those interested or about to embark on professional training/work and newly qualified professionals, who have the ability to relate their experiences to those about to follow them in a relaxed environment on a peer level.
Who are our target mentees?
- Anyone thinking of undertaking training in order to become a qualified archivist/records manager. Of any age, from any educational or social background, including graduates considering Masters programmes, mature students considering training/re-training, volunteers undertaking pre-course experience and students on MA courses.
- Mentees who would like to be in contact with someone who can help you find answers to any questions you may have about pre-course experience, what voluntary placements are like, how to apply for MA courses and whether to go full or part time? Managing coursework and looking for work after qualification, and anything else on your mind!
Who are our target mentors?
- MA/Diploma graduates and new professionals who are in employment and members of ARA.
- Mentors who have some time available each month to correspond by email with mentees and if necessary signpost them to the correct source of information to answer their question.
- Mentors should be comfortable relating their own experiences of applying for courses, the training programme, trying to find work and developing themselves, qualification + 5 years.
On expressing interest in the programme we’ll send you an information pack. If you’d like to take part respond with the information requested and you’ll be matched to the most suitable mentor/mentee available. Once you’ve been matched, how often you correspond is up to you to decide between yourselves. You can contact the SfNP with any issues, ideas or problems you may have, and we will contact you annually to check you still want to be involved or ask you for your comments to evaluate the programme.
Emily Gresham will be taking over as the new Communications Officer of the SfNP and spearheading this project as of 1st December and I'll be stepping down. If you have any questions, or would like to join the programme, please contact [log in to unmask]
Kind Regards

P.S. – A special thank you to the new professionals at this year’s Summer Seminar for their feedback on the programme and patience waiting for it to be launched!
