We need more volunteer mentors to the international web-based tutoring
programme for Ph.D students in statistics at Universities in developing
countries sponsored by the International Statistical Institute and the
Bernoulli Society
We organise mentoring at distance for Ph.D students, from the moment of
enrollment in a Ph.D programme after their master degree, until some
years after completion of the Ph.D. Students from any African country
can join the programme. Students need to have access to internet and
email, at least sporadically, in their local university. Membership is
free. The student will be put into contact with a senior statistician
(probabilist) at a university in a developed country, including Europe,
Americas and Australia. The matching between student and mentor is based
on information from both and will take into account some of the
specificities of the student and tutor, for example language, gender,
area of research. The matched pair, a student and a mentor, will have
contact via email, but are unlikely to meet in person, since this
programme does not provide any funding for travel. Mentoring is at distance.
