Hi Morgan,
>>Or do you want your work to be as widely available as possible?<<
Erm... yes.... but also I want the glory of academic journal publishing. I
guess it depends...depends on what I'm trying to achieve. If it is spread my
work around... yes (when it's finished), but that wouldn't necessarily mean
completely free to all and sundry... I don't know...thinking about lazy
students plagiarizing... but then again they can do that from a paper book
too...
OK, my official response to that is that I need to think some more about it.
~Caroline.

Greetings Caroline,
Most journals do ask for the copyright. And they don't pay you for your
article. And they often want you to ask their permission for any use you
might have for your own work. And then they charge universities a LOT of
money for access to the journals that we as academics have written.
Confused? You should be. I argue that this kind of academic publishing
is a special type of vanity publishing. In fact, in the sciences, you
often have to pay a not insignificant amount of money to get your
article published AND give the publisher the rights. Why do academics,
who are otherwise clever people, fall for this kind of scam you ask?
Well it's because of the way eligibility for tenured positions is
decided. If you get published in an A rated journal you get x points
towards tenure. B rated journal x% something, and so on. And who decides
which of these journals should be rated what I hear you asking. I'll
leave that for you to guess...
Then there is open access. Mostly, except for a few scammers, I mean,
journals that don't get open access, the author retains the copyright
and the article is available for free on the web for everyone to see. I
can confidently say that this is the way of the future. DRM does not work.
Think of it this way, do you want to sign the rights for your work to
someone whose business model is to restrict access to your work so they
can induce artificial scarcity so they can get paid (of which payment
you get nothing) by the university that you work for and who paid you to
do research in the first place? Or do you want your work to be as widely
available as possible?
