Dear all, I have an idea and I'd be interested in your thoughts. Apply
members have been involved in a number of workshops in universities to
help students think about careers outside academia. As a new approach,
I'm considering trying to set up a term-long course that brings post-grad
students into workplaces once a week. Currently a London-based concept,
this would involve the brightest and best London University anthropology
MA students applying for and committing to attend each week an afternoon
in a range of workplaces in London (businesses, government, NGOs -
wherever we can find applied anthropologists interested in being
involved). They would be given a short presentation by the resident
applied anthropologist, followed by discussion, before being set a task
(as near to real-life as possible) to complete in the rest of the
afternoon, using their anthropological, and other, skills. There would
probably be a couple of essays too, possibly mentored by the applied
anthropologists. What do you think? Would you be interested in being
involved in any way? Do you have academic contacts who might be
interested in setting this up? If you are available and would like to
discuss further, please come along to the Apply meeting in the RAI on
Thurs 24 Nov (6-8pm). Otherwise please do email me either direct or on
the list. best wishes, Kathryn On 12 Nov 2011, at 12:45, Rachael

****************************************************** Dear all The next
meeting of Apply - the ASA Network of Applied Anthropologists - is coming
up on Thursday 24th November 2011 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. The Venue is the Royal
Anthropological Institute (RAI). The flyer is attached. If you feel able
to print it up and place on any appropriate noticeboards, that would be
excellent. This time we plan to talk around the topic of "How can applied
anthropologists support students?". The discussion will be led by Kathryn
Tomlinson (Apply co-convenor). One of Apply's aims is to help students
explore their options for employment outside academia, and help them to
work out how to apply their skills in the workplace. Apply has run
workshops in universities in the past. We'd like to discuss innovative
and creative ideas about how applied anthropologists could support
students. There will also be time to discuss other topics relevant to
Apply. All are welcome to come along if you would like to contribute, but
please can you let me know by email if you are coming so that I have an
idea of numbers. The address of the RAI is: 50 Fitzroy Street, London,
W1T 5BT. The RAI office occupies the first, ground and lower ground
floors of a building just around the corner from Warren Street, NORTH of
Fitzroy Square. It is next door to French's Theatre Bookshop. Nearest
underground stations: Warren Street (Victoria and Northern Lines), or
mid-way between Great Portland Street and Euston Square (both Circle,
Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan Lines). Please contact me, NOT the
RAI, with any queries. All the best Rachael ----------------------
