You might want to look at the code in
http://www-personal.umich.edu/~nichols/JohnsGems.html#Gem6 (just use
spm_select instead of spm_get). Also there are toolboxes for SPM
making working with ROIs simple e.g.
http://www.fil.ion.ucl.ac.uk/spm/ext/#MarsBar . I haven't used it
myself though.
