Interesting one... we had a similar kind of thing where a couple of guys I
was working with with learning disabilities were asked not to come back to
a badminton club because they couldn't play to the standard of the club.
I'm still not fully convinced what I think about it... the rights of the
guys to join a club, versus the rights of the rest of the club to play
badminton at their chosen level? In the end I just ended up hiring the
court at a different time and getting together a bunch of folk with
learning disabilities, so we lost the "inclusion" element, but were still
able to have the experience of playing badminton, maybe not the ideal, but
it seemed to be the best solution available.

Subject: karaoke; discrimination or bad singing?
Hi,
Not sure how far this tale has spread outside of the UK, but there's been
some coverage this week of the three guys with learning disabilities who
were banned from a weekly karaoke session at their local pub, because the
landlord said their singing was bad for business. I've blogged in more
detail about this at
http://mydaftlife.wordpress.com/2011/11/26/karaoke-gate/
(with links to some of the coverage).
I'm interested in what thoughts some of you may have about this? I've
always been concerned about a blanket approach to inclusion which fails to
engage with thornier interactional issues. Maybe it's time for me to
revisit much earlier thoughts about legitimate and illegitimate impairment
effects.
Anyway, something to think about,
Cheers,
Sara
