Having spent some time trying to figure out what the heck is wrong, the
bottom line is that there was a bug that was fixed a year ago, but somehow
the fix never made it onto the 2.1.5 update server. But I've put it there
now. On the other hand, 2.2.1 has always been ok.
This bug definitely would impact the Windows installation, because it
inserted a \ in the URL where a / belonged. I'm not sure why it would
impact Ubuntu VM running inside Windows, though, so maybe there is still
another issue there. (Especially if it is 2.2.1 code, which never had
this problem.)
