the next research seminar of The Open University Statistics Group will be held on Friday, December 9th at the following venue: Alan Turing Building (room: 306), Walton Hall campus, Milton Keynes (MK7 6AA). The meeting will begin at 11 a.m., with tea and coffee available from 10.30 a.m., and usually finishes at approximately 12 noon. The meeting is free and open to all.
Professor Jim Q. Smith (Department of Statistics, University of Warwick) will be speaking on the topic of: "Chain event graphs: a new graphical representation of a discrete model".
Abstract:
Bayesian Networks (BNs) are now widely used and have provided a framework for interrogating models, describing their implicit geometry, estimation and model selection. However many discrete models have a strongly asymmetric structure. When this is so the Bayesian Network becomes an inefficient depiction. Here we present a new class of models called the chain event graph - based on an event tree of a problem. This class generalises the class of discrete BNs whilst boasting most of its advantages. In this talk I will discuss some of the properties of this new class and demonstrate its uses.
