Hi Keith
Questions about team structure seem to the Zeitgiest at the moment. I'm
interested in this too.
We've recently changed, so I'll let you know what we used to have and to
be honest I'm not quite sure what we've got at the moment.
We used top have a Web Developments Team based in the IT department
(confusingly called Learning and Corporate Support Services), consisting
of 5 Developers with a range of different skills, managed by a Web Manager
- who also does lots of coding.
The skills shake out roughly as
2 Devs for mainly design, UI, HTML , CSS some Javascript
3 Devs who mainly do Rails, Django, and also take care of Deployments
Manager leads technology and often shows us the way.
This team is tasked with collaborating with the Web Team based in
marketing, consisting of a Web Manager, and 2 Web Editors. It has also had
a new member who liaises with our Enquiries & Admissions team. They are
editorially responsible for all our recruitment and research sites.
Our Student 'Portal' (very 2005) has an editorial team also of 2 people.
The faculties have external facing marketing sites and sites for existing
students, as do many of the support departments.
The content of these sites is maintained by people who have been trained
in the use of Django. They are trained in the use of the site and more
latterly a new element of training is in applying editorial guidelines.
There are approx 150 of these across departments and faculties. (There are
approx 100+ django sites -each is an instance of a basic site)
I hope this helps (it's helped me, writing it)
Support is something that I think need some work, but we have managed not
to badly in the past.
I'd be happy to be involved if this question develops
All the best
