I'm no good at identifying anything...but reading the marvellous Objects
Lessons: Metals booklet (downloadable on the SHCG website:
http://www.shcg.org.uk/scripts/resources_object.asp plug, plug, plug),
I read with interest that: "Much of what we assume to be iron is in
fact steel, an alloy of iron and carbon. 'Mild' steel, which is
low-carbon, was manufactured on a large industrial scale from the
mid-1800s."
So yeap, 19th century - but post-mid 19th century?!

Hi
I'd be very grateful if someone could help me to date these forks. I'm
assuming 19th century, but if anyone could be any more specific, or begs
to differ, that would be helpful.
The ones on the left have turned wooden handles, the two on the right
appear to have bone? Handles.
They have 'STEEL' stamped into the metal on the back of each shaft.
Ones on left are about 175 mm long in total and ones on right are about
190 mm long.
Thanks!
Adam
