An Electronic Index to the Traumatic Stress Literature

PILOTS stands for: Published International Literature on Traumatic 
Stress). This database is an electronic index to the worldwide literature 
on PTSD and other mental health consequences of exposure to traumatic 
events. Unlike other databases, PILOTS does not restrict its coverage to 
articles appearing in selected journals. It attempts to include all 
publications relevant to PTSD and other forms of traumatic stress, 
whatever their origin without disciplinary, linguistic, or geographic 
limitations.

PILOTS is produced by the National Center for PTSD, and is electronically 
available to the public. There is no charge for using the database, and no 
account or password is required. Although it is sponsored by the U.S. 
Department of Veterans Affairs, the PILOTS database is not limited to 
literature on PTSD among Veterans.

Each record in PILOTS is a representation of a document, containing:

a bibliographic citation, giving the information (author, title, and 
source) needed to locate the document

a description of the article's content, information which basic computer 
search techniques can use in selecting documents of possible interest

.

a brief summary, to help in determining whether it contains information 
relevant to a particular enquiry.

The PILOTS database is intended to enable users to identify those 
publications that contain the information they need. PILOTS citations are 
not intended to substitute for the documents they represent; in no case 
should the information contained in a PILOTS citation be used as the basis 
for a clinical decision. As with any bibliographical compilation, it is 
the responsibility of the compilers to provide accurate bibliographical 
information. It is always the responsibility of the user to determine 
whether the information he or she finds is applicable to the situation at 
hand, and to use the best professional judgment in its application.

Modify Your Search

If your search does not turn up the results you want, here are some 
suggestions:

Too Many Citations

.

Examine at least a few of the results to see whether you defined your 
topic too broadly, or used too broad a search strategy.

.

If almost all of them are indeed relevant, ask yourself how you can 
redefine your objective. (Perhaps you should choose a narrower topic: for 
example, natural disasters rather than stressors in general.)

.

If many of the citations are irrelevant, you need to refine your search 
strategy. Look at some of the irrelevant citations, and see what they have 
in common. Does the same descriptor appear in all of them? If you repeated 
your search without using that descriptor, would you be eliminating 
valuable citations as well as irrelevant ones? If not, you've found one 
way of bringing your search results down to a more manageable size. (Other 
methods might include restricting your search by language, or by date, or 
by format.)

Too Few Citations

.

What if your search has retrieved fewer citations than you think it should 
have?

.

Perhaps there really are very few papers in your area. (Or at least very 
few that have found their way into PILOTS.)

.

Or perhaps your search strategy was too narrow. Again, look at your 
results. Find a citation that is directly relevant, and see what 
descriptors were applied to it. Perhaps you might want to add one or more 
of them to your search strategy.
And don't forget to double check to be sure that you weren't done in by a 
simple typing error.

No Relevant Citations

.

And what if you could find no relevant citations? Is there a paper that 
you know to be relevant? Then search for that paper (by author and title), 
retrieve the citation, and see how it was indexed in PILOTS. That might 
suggest one or more descriptors to use in searching.

.

It often happens that a search of PILOTS (or any other database) doesn't 
produce the results that you expect. Database searching works best as an 
iterative process. Don't expect to get definitive results with your first 
try; plan on doing an exploratory search, and then modify your search 
strategy according to the results you get.

.

Don't be discouraged if your first search strategy doesn't work perfectly. 
Experts at database searching often have to modify their search 
techniques, especially when working with a database that is new to them. 
And don't be surprised if you come across a citation whose indexing seems 
strange to you. This is a complex literature, and the indexer is, after 
all, perforce a generalist. You may well know more about the topic than 
the indexer does. (If you find a paper that you believe has been 
incorrectly indexed, please let us know. We don't mind correcting our 
mistakes.)

Database Purpose and Scope

The goal of the PILOTS database is to include citations to all literature 
on PTSD and other mental health sequelae of traumatic events, without 
disciplinary, linguistic, or geographical limitations, and to offer both 
current and retrospective coverage.

At the end of fiscal year 2006 there were over 30,000 references in the 
database. The database is updated bimonthly, and links to full text 
articles are included for over 38% of citations, including all National 
Center authored articles. PILOTS is a bibliographical database. That is, 
it is essentially a list of publications, rather than a collection of 
texts.

Addition of Publications to the Database

We encourage you to send copies of your publications to us so that we 
might index them in the PILOTS database. While we are unable to include 
unpublished conference presentations or to index published articles from 
manuscript copy, we are eager to obtain publications from obscure as well 
as well-known journals, books, book chapters, pamphlets, technical 
reports, and materials in all languages.

Using PILOTS for Assessment Information

PILOTS provides a bibliographic citation and each record includes an 
"Instruments" field listing the psychological and medical assessment 
instruments used in the research or clinical work reported in the 
document.

This feature enables PILOTS database users to:

determine which instruments were used in the work described in a 
particular paper;
determine which published papers have used a particular instrument;

locate papers whose focus is the description, validation, or use of a 
particular instrument.

established a standard form of the name of each instrument that has been

To make searching for specific assessment instruments possible, we have 
established a standard form of the name of each measure. This form 
represents, to the best of our knowledge, the official name of the 
instrument as given by its author or publisher. We attempt to use that 
form consistently, regardless of the form of name used by the author of a 
particular paper. These standardized names are assembled in the PILOTS 
Database Instruments Authority List (PDF-3.78MB). This list includes all 
projective tests, self-report questionnaires, structured interviews, and 
other instruments that have been used in papers indexed in the PILOTS 
Database. Each entry includes:

the name of the instrument;

.

the surnames of its creators (this information is intended primarily to 
indicate which instrument is meant - there are several with similar names 
- and should not be taken as a definitive ascription of authorship);

.

a bibliographic reference to one or more publications cited as the source 
of information on the instrument by those reporting use of it;

.

a bracketed reference to the 5-digit PILOTS ID number of the document 
referenced or of the document citing it.

In addition, many entries also include a brief description of the nature 
of the instrument or its relationship to other instruments. There are also 
many cross-references, linking alternate names for instruments with the 
form used in the PILOTS database.

(It should be understood that the Authority List does not purport to be a 
complete bibliography of psychological and medical assessment instruments 
used in traumatic stress work. We have not attempted to maintain the 
standards of accuracy and completeness that we hope characterize the 
PILOTS database itself. The bibliographic citations in the Authority List 
are taken without revision from a wide range of publications in the 
traumatic stress literature, and several years of experience has shown us 
that many writers give deplorably incomplete information about the 
instruments they use in their work. The PILOTS Database Instruments 
Authority List represents our best efforts at bringing consistency to a 
chaotic bibliographical environment without diverting our attention 
substantially from our primary mission: the indexing of the worldwide 
traumatic stress literature.)

Abstract   This article highlights a recent invited presentation by the US 
Department of Health and Human Services on the efficacy of recreational 
therapy in mental health promotion and prevention. The second annual Steps 
to a HealthierUS National Prevention Summit was convened to focus on 
President Bush's HealthierUS pillars, which encourage Americans to be 
physically active every day, eat a nutritious diet, get preventive 
screenings, and make healthy choices. The Summit specifically addressed 
the US Secretary of Health and Human Services's Steps to a HealthierUS 
Initiative, which highlights chronic disease prevention by addressing 
diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular disease, cancer, and asthma. Research 
was presented on the physiological and psychological benefits of 
recreational activity in disease prevention, including the prescriptive 
use of recreational activity in alcoholism prevention and rehabilitation, 
reducing obesity and secondary problems in children, and the prevention 
and amelioration of PTSD symptoms in children. In each study, recreational 
therapy was shown to be an effective intervention by decreasing negative 
symptoms such as untoward stress, anxiety, and depression. [Author
