Research Associate
(Neurofeedback)
Cardiff University - Cardiff School of Medicine
Department of Psychological Medicine and Neurology and Cardiff University Brain Research Imaging Centre (CUBRIC)
This new post is funded by the MRC through a Developmental Clinical Studies grant. It is embedded in the research environment of the MRC Centre for Neuropsychiatric Genetics and Genomics (http://medicine.cf.ac.uk/en/research/research-groups/cngg/), the Neuroscience and Mental Health Research Institute (http://www.cardiff.ac.uk/research/neuroscience/), CUBRIC (http://psych.cf.ac.uk/cubric/) and the National Centre for Mental Health (http://ncmh.info/).
The post will be part of the psychiatric neuroimaging group that works across these four centres, coordinated by Professor David Linden. The group has research interests in genetic imaging, behavioural pharmacology and genetics, imaging of at-risk states of mental disorders and social cognitive neuroscience. The main programme of therapeutic research is based on neurofeedback (Johnston et al., Cogn Affect Behav Neurosci. 2011, 11:44-51), an exciting new imaging technique, based on real-time functional magnetic resonance imaging. We have piloted the use of this technique for emotion regulation in healthy individuals and patients with depression and are also piloting it for other neuropsychiatric disorders. You will specifically work on a randomised controlled trial of the effects of neurofeedback in depression, but also be involved in the wider development and refinement of the technique, for example through multivariate pattern and functional connectivity analyses. Ample opportunity for training of advanced imaging and assessment methods will be provided, including direct contact with our international collaborators. The MRC Centre, CUBRIC and the NMHRI run regular training and professional development sessions and have effective mentoring programmes for career development. You will have a relevant PhD in Neuroscience, Genetics, Physics, Psychology, Physiology or other relevant discipline or near to completion.
This post is fixed-term for 3 years.
Salary: £29853 - £35646 per annum.
